The celebration of the Tazlina was held Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Vigor’s Ketchikan shipyard. The Tazlina was slated to enter service in Lynn Canal in May 2019 and is expected to improve ferry service through the area. Compared to the M/V LeConte, one of the vessels serving Lynn Canal, the Alaska Class Ferries are longer, wider, deeper, and heavier and can handle much higher winds and seas. The Tazlina was named by Melea Voran who won an essay contest as a 7th grader in the Port Alsworth Tanalian School and is named after the Tazlina Glacier located 43 miles north of Valdez. The vessel was designed by Elliott Bay Design Group of Seattle, Washington and constructed at Vigor Shipyard in Ketchikan, Alaska. The first Alaska Marine Highway ferry built in Alaska, along with its sister ship the MV Hubbard. The MV Tazlina was christened in Ketchikan on August 11, 2018 by former First Lady, Donna Walker and is scheduled to begin service in early May, 2019. The Tazlina ship operates as a day boat in the northern panhandle.

The MV Tazlina's onboard amenities include observation lounges with comfortable chairs, a covered heated solarium, a cafeteria-style restaurant, a children's play area and a quiet room.
